Brian was struck by the question. Not once had Gus ever asked about anything regarding God or religion, not even at the holidays, during which they'd all just celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas.
Brian pulled Gus down off of his shoulders and held him in his arms. "What makes you ask?" Brian was biding his time. He needed a minute to figure out how to answer the question. Brian wasn't an atheist, though he and God were only on speaking terms on the rarest of occasions.
"Daniel's Rabbi told him that God gave the birds their wings so they could fly. Who gave airplanes their wings, Daddy?"
This was a question that Brian's pragmatic nature would let him answer, "Two regular men, they were brothers. They figured out how to make airplanes fly."
"Were they as smart as you and me?"
Brian smiled, "Well I don't know about that, but they had a dream. They followed it and they made it happen."
"Like Justin followed his dream to be an artist?"
Brian nodded in reply. He loved listening to his son's mind work. Though he was only six years old, he was able to make remarkably disparate connections.
"Was it God, then, that made those brothers and you and me so smart?"
Okay, this is actually happening. Brian thought to himself. He had zero interest in helping to indoctrinate his son into any belief system that was filled with bigotry and hypocrisy. On the other hand, Brian knew he owed it to Gus to let him explore his own natural curiosities. Whatever issue Brian had with God, or vice versa, they shouldn't have an impact on Gus' interest in learning about a higher power.
Brian took a deep breath and asked, "You have a lot of questions about God?"
Gus nodded. His eyes were big as he searched Brian's face for approval of the subject.
"Well let me talk to Justin and your Moms and we'll see if there is some way we can help you find those answers."
